Oh, nice! I thought this was just a regular 12” but upon opening the sleeve I’ve discovered there’s a whole album’s worth of material here. As you may have deduced from the title, this LP consists of GLK reworking esoteric London post-funksters The Heliocentrics, apt since in the ‘Killer’s own words, ‘Centrics producer/sticksman Malcolm Catto was “the reason I got into all of this shit”.
What to expect? Well, organic grooves from the excellent recent Heliocentrics album chopped and spliced and echoed into a weird jazz-funk-dub odyssey, with heavy and imaginative drum grooves, spluttering, crackling brass bursts, squeaky synth weirdness and choppy sampling which drifts along in a strange sort of narrative; one minute you’re flailing around amid danceable grooves, the next there’s a double bass line accompanied by the sound of knives being sharpened, the next there’s free jazz putter, dub-echoed brass and smoky atmospherics, and yet it’s always an inviting and accessible sonic sprawl despite the nightmarish undertones which drift in and out. Genre-wise it’s very hard to pin down. Free funk meets spooky dub ambience all tempered by Gaslamp Killer’s understated lightness of touch so the mix never gets too busy and confusing.
