Manchester post-punkers Pins caused a rare moment of Norman controversy when their last 7” came out and our Mikey may have inferred that he thought they were like a less good Savages. It is up to MugginsBot here to clean up the mess and give a fair and respectful hearing to their debut full-length ‘Girls Like Us’.
This quartet are wrangling a post-punky kind of indie rock which owes a fair debt to Joy Division, chiming little one note guitar melodies, icily driving rhythm section and plaintive but urgent vocals from singer Faith. I have to admit that I kind of agree with Mike’s Savages comparison in places, particularly the title track and the single ‘Stay True’, but this lot throw some ‘60s girl group influences when they go into a reverbed and spooky reinvention of ‘50s jukebox rock’n’roll like on ‘Waiting For The End’ or ‘Get With Me’.
While they can sometimes stray a little too far into strident Florencey bellowing for my jaded robot ears, and there are a couple of brief instrumental interludes which I can’t get behind and an unconvincing Meanwhile Back In Communist Russia-esque spoken word number which takes a bit of wind out of their sails mid-album, this is a solid indie pop album with a hard-edged post punk backbone ensuring that it never gets too twee. Really not bad.
