I don’t hear phaser on drums as often as I’d like. I don’t know why it’s not common practice ‘cause it sounds sick. ‘Phases & Repetition’ starts with phased drums and a dub heavy Can groove possessing with it the promise of a classic from the outset. LA Machine don’t exist anymore but I’m sure back 1996 they were the unsung heroes of their local scene. Why? Because they somehow managed to make valid modern psychedelia.
Now, that’s not easy, as the slew of bullshit new-psych bands invading the airwaves would no doubt sheepishly testify, if only you could ply them with enough booze and weed to get them to fess up. Psych bands don’t even get baked anymore...lame. Anyway, I have no idea how short lived LA Machine were as a group but this seven track compilation is an impressive introduction to a band that would no doubt be slaying the competitors in 2013.
To me this sounds like a true hybrid post-punk band echoing the work of Can, Neu, Gang Of Four, PiL, Liquid Liquid and stripping it back to the bare essentials. The bass is truly gnarly and I could no doubt dance my ass of to every track here (even the slow groove of ‘Find A Way’). To see these lads perform in some sweatbox back in the day must have been such a treat! Best two-piece I’ve never heard. DUBPUNKS UNITE!
