- Versions by Zola Jesus (W/ Jg Thirlwell & Mivos Quartet)
Here’s something a bit different from the inimitable (not that it stops people trying) Zola Jesus which is very much dividing the office. Li’l Biz just said she didn’t like it “and you can put that in your review” to which Phil contributed “No, I don’t get her at all”. Meanwhile our stockroom goblin Brian, who visits in the night and leaves post-its on the promos, has marked this one as “Largely excellent reworkings of top ZJ trax”. I have to say I’m with Brian on this one.
On here she’s not doing her usual synthpop warbling but has instead recruited JG “Foetus” Thirlwell to arrange the songs for string quartet, recontextualising them into a chamber pop setting which frames Danilova’s voice perfectly. The songs have a sweeping, rainswept feel to them with nicely restrained arrangements and tastefully delivered vocals. Basically if you like the idea of Zola Jesus songs arranged for a string quartet, this will deliver. If you can’t stand Zola Jesus or it’s the more abrasive and/or gothy elements of her sound which get you off, this probably won’t be for you.
