- Blue by Moritz von Oswald Trio
Moritz Von Oswald (Basic Channel, Maurizio, Rhythm & Sound) Sasu Ripatti (Vladislav Delay, Sistol, Luomo) and Max Loderbauer (NSI, Sun Electric) make a welcome return with some reduced dub house/ techno. ‘Blue’ is a fitting title for the lush deep and hypnotic groove on offer. Stripped to base elements it’s a really spacious and luxurious track, with the pulse of classic Maurizio the nuances are revealed slowly as things unfurl. It’s not a million miles from the type of pace and aesthetic on the recent Moritz Von Oswald and Juan Atkins ‘Borderland’ album for Tresor. I was pretty underwhelmed by this at first but a couple of spins and it worms its way in. Yeah we’ve kinda heard it all before but when it’s done this well by one of the genres innovators then it’s difficult to dislike.
Meanwhile on the flip ‘Blue (Dub)’ has a far heavier low end throb, obviously as it’s a dub version the sound palette gets the full on dub treatment. It pretty much remains enchanting for the full twelve minute duration. A slow steady pace, again very spacious with economic use of individual sounds all shimmering and glowing with spaced out delay and reverb. It’s very well executed minimalism using just enough sounds to make the statement, nothing more, nothing less.
