- Cat Mask at Huggie Temple by Desert Heat
This is a collaboration between Steve Gunn, Cian Nugent and John Truscinski. The trio jammed together for the first time after a festival in Newcastle Upon Tyne and it all worked as if by magic...although the fact that two of them had previously played in the Gunn-Truscinski Duo made the thing gel that bit easier. They are joined here by Cian Nugent, an Irish guitarist who fits in with the duo’s sprawling dustbowl blues like a particularly well-fitting glove.
The record consists of two lengthy improvised pieces. The first showcases the interplay between the two guitarists, both twisting, turning and interweaving throughout like a sun drenched, slowed down take on the classic Captain Beefheart boogie. The drums sit alongside, never interfering with the intricacies, but providing a solid backbeat for them to work.
The second piece is more of a droney raga affair with hypnotic ethnic sounding guitars slowly building up from near silence, weaving around each other but never reaching any kind of exploding crescendo. The band name and sleeve imagery works perfectly, the music seems to be a soundtrack to long drives across miles and miles of arid desert, you can feel the heat and desolation in the guitars. This is an excellent debut release from the trio, hugely enjoyable slabs of creative improvisation with a real evocative spirit.
