It's a crime that this is only the third solo release from Yves De Mey as this guy is an excellent producer. Last heard on the now defunct Sandwell District label with the brilliant 'Counting Triggers' 2x12" and earlier on Line with 2009's 'Lichtung' album. He also records with Peter Van Hosen as Sendai with a few releases on Van Hosen's Time To Express label.
As with 'Counting Triggers' Yves brings his advanced sound design and supreme technical abilities to 'Metrics' culminating in four tracks of delicious, mostly dark post-techno.
Opener 'Box Caisson' sets the mood with gloomy abstraction, heading straight into a deep and vivid future zone with brooding pulses, suggestion of melody, electronic zaps, smothered voices and dislocated beats. The title track is even more sinister and unsettling with eerie paranoia inducing atmospherics and distorted beats that recall Pan Sonic at their most creepy.
'Eye Splice' spits you out of the wormhole into an alternate dimension with warmer sounds, a slow erratic gloopy beat and some dub techno flavoured metallic chords. The overall mood recalling parts of the Basic House album on Digitalis which was the work of Opal Tapes label owner Stephen Bishop so there's clearly a shared aesthetic at work.
The EP closes with the cavernous future dub of 'Cessation'. A dreamy laid-back cut that slowly works its magic with gaseous clouds of ascending sound that shimmer and dissolve. A fine EP and thoroughly recommended.
