Nate Wooley is one of those people who really needs to change his name. You’d think from his surname he would make soft, gentle, woollen music. Instead it's hard and abrasive. How about Nate Skronk or Nate Squark? Just a suggestion.

This latest release sees him team up with a series of pals in order to produce a thirty-eight minute piece of challenging jazz inflected improv: each player seemingly playing what the hell they like as Nate puffs into his trumpet, while on the B side everyone is given the task of making the most absurd sounds come out of their instruments.

I’m always reminded of the bootlegged Brian Wilson piece ‘George Fell into his French Horn’ where he makes experienced, expensive session musicians pretend they’d got stuck inside their instruments.  These lads are obviously having tremendous fun here, even for someone like me who doesn’t ‘get’ improvised music there is something to enjoy - the drumming by Chris Corsano is utterly mesmerising.

The vinyl comes with bonus mp3s and a voucher which lets you watch a video of the whole event.
