- Cowboys (For Karen) by Torn Hawk & Karen Gwyer
Before her acclaimed ‘Needs Continuum’ LP was released, Karen Gwyer passed some tracks on to New York’s Luke “Torn Hawk” Wyatt for a remix. What Wyatt did instead was create a 35-minute “suite of deformations” of the material which is presented here in its entirety on a mysterious-looking 12” which comes with an illegibly photocopied sheet of A4 paper.
On the record Hawk reinvents Gwyer’s slow-burning “bath house” into deep psychedelia which is practically unrecognisable from its source material, with stuttering looped hypnorhythms and cut up synths accompanying the listener as they explore bright, plasticky guitar tones and distant echoey wibbles and moody industrial ambience. On the second side he steps out into some stoned loose guitar jammin’ which is reminding me instantly of the likes of Sun Araw, High Wolf and Inner Tube. Proper blissful, tranced out bong loops; this EP keeps getting better as it goes along. Totally worth spacing out to.
