Brian Pyle is back this week with the latest installment from his ever-changing Ensemble Economiquealias. The last thing we got from him was a split with Heroin In Tahiti which knocked my block off with its murky tropical chills, and now he’s got another LP on Not Not Fun which sees him heading into a kind of song-ish territory with six tracks of blurred feverish drift smeared greasily over this platter.

It’s like a droney kind of synthpop which sprawls languidly to the point of near-ambience, with the vocals swamped with reverb until they’re just muttering washes of texture over the syrupy bloops and cold, dispassionate swells of ancient synthesisers and tape hiss. It’s got a kind of gothy feel to it in places, but gothy like Horrid Red mixed with the cold-sweat psychedelia of Decimus, not gothy like the Sisters of Mercy. I have to say, though, it’s causing a little cognitive dissonance with me today, because the sun is out and it’s boiling and I’m in quite a positive mood and this seems like cold weather music somehow. If you’re not the summery type, though, you’ll welcome its ominous, slow-creeping layers of silky blackness.
