Denver Duo Craig Nice and Andy Rauworth aka Gauntlet Hair release their second studio album for the Dead Oceans label. It seems the pair have dispelled the myth of the “difficult” second album, ‘Stills’ is a massive leap forward in terms of production with Jacob Portrait of Unknown Mortal Orchestra at the helm and a superb mix of new-wave, goth, noise pop, with a range of influences from The Jesus And Mary Chain on ‘Human Nature’ to Depeche Mode on ‘Bad Apple’ and an interesting bass sound right up front in the mix a lot like other great new-wave bands of the eighties.
‘Heave’ is a massive goth/punk tune with a chiming guitar sound like early Cure or Cocteau Twins, ‘G.I.D.’ has a hint of Animal Collective in the vocals and a thumping bass beat that would test your speakers to the limit. The Dead Oceans label has put out some great records over the past year or so what with Phosphorescent, Califone and Akron/Family on their roster, Gauntlet Hair are a fine addition to that list and ‘Stills’ is an album of weight and substance and real originality.

"Do reviewers contribute to second-album syndrome as much as the lacklustre efforts of certain artists themselves?">
