Can’t say I was over the moon with the last Ariel Pink record or the lacklustre gig I witnessed at the Brudenell last summer plus Mexican Summer ain’t the label it used to be so I’m looking on at this 7” (which ft. Violens’ Jorge Elbrecht) with deep suspicion. No disappointment pweese...I can’t take any more disappointment.
Oh, it’s cool, this sounds beautiful. Pink does what he does best, which is appropriate bygone pop styles and gives them a lease of new life. ‘Hang On To Life’ is real smooth beautiful pop music, perfect for mid-’70s radio and Elbrecht provides additional breeziness with his wondrous tenor. This shit be magical. Flip it and ‘No Real Friend’ gets into ridiculous territory with a funky little vibe and melody lifted wholesale from ‘70s American sitcom culture. Think Cheers, Taxi, Charlies Angels, Golden Girls, All The Family etc...there’s probably better examples but I’m British so I only know a few. They do a delightful job of it too. Pure melancholic nostalgia. Oh, it comes with a newspaper print poster of the artwork, which is totally amazing btw.
