The new Lone (a.k.a Matt Cutler) single is banging! If you thought last year’s ‘Galaxy Garden’ was killer then you’re totally gonna dig this. It takes the fundamental sonic template laid down on ‘GG’ and deconstructs the shit out of it introducing elements of hip-hop (there’s a tasty little break at the end just to reinforce the point) to the futuro-rave synths, abstracted afro-dance clusters and lush percussive house melodies we’ve become so accustomed to. Hopefully I’ll be hearing this little beauty all summer long. Flip it and ‘Begin to Begin’ is a typically understated Balearic style B-side. It’s loose, tasteful and pinned down by a cool freestyle pan flute melody. Super dreamy chilled biz.

A superb record, Airglow Fires kicks off with nice atmospheric vibes, giving the feel of a sunset tune before switching up into a dancefloor slayer. Lone pulls of the feat of keeping things sounding contemporary and fresh whilst also giving a nod to the classic rave tunes of our youth. For me as an almost 40 year old, I'm perhaps unqualified to speak on behalf of the youth, BUT... reckon the 18 year old me would have delighted in playing this next to the Beltram and co records released on R & S 20 years ago, whilst as a DJ now would be sure that this would work alongside tracks by MCDE, Four Tet and Jamie XX today. Will be putting that to the test very soon.

First listen i wasn't bowled over, second listen i was like ah yeah that sounds about right, then the third listen it just clicked and my brain melted. A truly fab piece of dance feel good sounds that reminisce of the earlier rave days while keeping it fresh as a daisy for contemporary kids. Ridiculously lovely. Lone does it again. x
