Hot on the heels of their 12” with Fourtet (and with a mooted collaboration with that mysterious musical chameleon Dame Neneh Cherry on the horizon), London synth-and-drum brothers Ben and Tom Page this week drop their second album of cool and difficult to pin down psych-synth-funk grooves.
The duo somehow manage to cram a plethora of influences into their minimal modern dance music, with tribal grooves, jazzy melodies, hypnotic drones, the bounce of house music but the rough edges of rock, it all fits together so coolly and calmly and playfully that it’s a joy to watch it unfold, going from the hands-in-the-air horror dance fun of ‘Steel Drummer’ to the herky-jerky squelchy rhythmic experimentalism of ‘Symposium’ with an assurance which reminds me of their fellow Londonites Heliocentrics. This is a good record, it’s making me lose track of time. If you like your music clever, minimal and danceable look no further.
