8/10 Clinton Staff review, 05 July 2013

Phil, our master, our leader, a man short on leg but long on know-how was most enthusiastic this morning when shoving this album into my sweat drenched palms. It’s a rich and varied album of high intensity techno, concentrating on the bleepy dancefloor friendly side rather than the bleak evocative shapes of the dub techno genre.

Fengler has been honing his craft for some time now with a series of 12”s and DJ mix CDs. The tracks here come thick and fast and the album moves along at breakneck speed. Its outlandish electronics, abstract melody and abrasive textures are all siphoned into a techno pipe, spewing out pulsing rhythms, intense bleepery and at times a foray into kraut-like repetition.

The mood over the first few tracks is uniformly ecstatic but the gorgeous drift of ‘Distant Episode’ shows Fengler stretching out into the outrageously evocative ambience of the likes of Deepchord. Its spectral atmospheres are wholly at odds with the rhythmic pulse of the opening of ‘Taz’ which adds one by one gorgeous washes of synth to create a tremendous track full of mystery and atmosphere. This is a bold and varied techno record, its textures sometimes synthetic and processed leaning more towards the harsh beat driven angle but also features forays into spaced out driftiness. Following its second run through this morning, Phil has taken a copy to play in his car.
