Planet Mu and Mike Paradinas release this fantastic 2 CD set of unreleased material from the very early beginnings of the u-ziq legacy, out of the usual crop of nineties electronic acts like Aphex Twin, Orbital, etc., Mr Paradinas perhaps didn’t get the exposure that he deserved but it’s great to see him still creating such amazing dance music. ‘Somerset Avenue Tracks’ is pure class, an awesome mix of dance-floor fillers to chilled post-club beats from the golden age of dance music, tracks like the amazing ‘Vinxel’ which is over seven minutes of arms in the air bliss and then you’re hit with the pure Aphex acid of ‘Toy Gun #2’.
I know a lot of people would frown at the idea of cashing in on a “lost tracks” style compilation and that a lot of these tunes may have ended up on the cutting room floor, but not me, if it’s an artist that I love then I’ll always welcome a few extra bits and pieces that may have never seen the light of day, this kind of mix is perfect for the collector and the newby alike, with the slammin’ piano house of ‘Toss’ and the chiming tubular bells sound on ‘Billy Bellsium’ this is a compilation of masterful electronic music and a perfect companion to this year’s ‘Chewed Corners’ LP.
