25 year old Nao Kakimoto aka [.que] releases his long awaited debut on the Schole imprint, typically packaged in a minimal gloss slipcase featuring some lovely city landscape photography by Shin Kikuchi, this is exactly what I need for this rainy Thursday morning, gorgeous twinkly folktronica led mostly by Kakimoto’s crisp acoustic guitar playing, with just the right amount of electronica that doesn’t over power the melodic charm of this wonderful music.

With the occasional wisp of female vocal and slide guitar contributions from label-mate Paniyola on ‘Rest’, ‘Drama’ is both ambient and uplifting in equal measures, there are charming moments of everyday atmospherics like the sound of splashing rain (‘Daybreak’) or the tinkle of coffee cup and spoon(‘Rest’), this adds a delightful sense of the mundane becoming something more ethereal.

Other instrumentation included here are piano, electric guitar and even the occasional live drumming as opposed to the electronic beats, while other similar artists can sound a little too synthetic or artificial, [.que] manages to combine the mechanic with the organic in a simple but very effective way, ‘Drama’ is a fantastic debut from an artist with a lot of promise.
