8/10 Penrith Steve Customer review, 1st November 2014
“The Early Year” comprises the first two Scud Mountain Boys albums, “Dance The Night Away” and “Pine box”, both from 1995. There’s good stuff on here, the original songs are augmented by a few covers such as Glen Campbell’s “Witchita Lineman” and Cher’s “Gypsies, Tramps and Theives”. The best cover is their version of Jimmy Webb’s “Where’s The Playground Susie?” Among the stand-out originals are the brilliant “Television”, “Silo” and “Freight OF Fire”. These two albums are great, but they only whetted the palette for their third and final album “Massachusetts” which was a masterpiece. Joe Pernice went on to form The Pernice Brothers.
