Detroit avant-popsters Zoos Of Berlin with their new album ‘Lucifer In The Rain’, a pleasant mixture of modern chamber pop with a little hint of Bowie-lite and glam pomp, ‘Lucifer In The Rain’ is a slow building album of jangled guitars and foot tapping rhythms with a soft vocal like a cross between Neil Hannon and Bryan Ferry, ‘Charnel House’ has a lovely keyboard sound that gives it a bit of an OMD sort of feel, ‘Companion Turns’ is like The xx with it’s echoed guitar picking and whispered vocals.
There are a few uptempo moments like on ‘Last Decade’ and ‘Shapeless In The Night’ which are just like The Divine Comedy without the comedy. It’s a strange mix in all with bits of post-punk rubbing shoulders with twee indie pop and glam rock, normally all these conflicting styles would be quite confusing but Zoos Of Berlin seem to pull it off quite well and ‘Lucifer In The Rain’ is quirky but catchy in equal measures.
