After their well received debut on Pinch’s Tectonic label, this new  effort lands on Manchester's Black Box imprint, Author being a collaboration between Jack Sparrow and Ruckspin - two of Dubsteps fringe populists. As a man approaching his 42nd birthday and increasingly bewildered by the eternal splintering and melding of club styles,  I’m kind of unsure how to respond to this atmospheric hip-jerking, head--nodding treat.

There appears to be a lot of underground British rap vocalists guesting over these tracks that range from brooding, the grimey,  the jazzy and funky-assed  with the underlying atmosphere occasionally posied around a Burial-esque rain-swept street in a no-go area out of town. There’s tons of scope to make way for more soulful and woozy urban treats as well . The production is powerful and engaging with an emphasis on punchy post-dubstep grooves but there’s a considered use of dynamics and space to give the journey a  propulsive, airy rush of euphoria.

Just the kind of gutsy, yet soulful music you expect to be blasting from them Urban sprawl negotiating car radios tuned to Rinse FM whilst retaining some real underground credentials and a rich consistent quality.
