Oh, this is good. Constant Mongrel are one of the Australian garage rock bands you like so much, and this is their second album. Oh, this is good. Constant Mongrel are one of the Australian garage rock bands you like so much, and this is their second album. I didn’t hear the first one but I can already tell I’ll have to track that down soon. They play a dirgey and repetitive brand of garage rock that falls into territory between garage punk types like Eddy Current Suppression Ring, Pissed Jeans or Parquet Courts and repetitive hypno-rockers like Lungfish or Cold Pumas. As you would expect from a band like this on Siltbreeze, they are excellent at it.

It works tremendously, this whole collection is packed with crunchy guitar jangle, metronomic rhythms, and persistently cycling riffs which are celebratory and primitive and by the closing krautily euphoric synth-soaked strains of ‘Inflicted’ I’m ready to go again. Playing at 45rpm it’s short and sweet but I think it’s one of the strongest rock albums I’ve heard so far this year. Quite superb.
