Ommmmmmmm...I’m floating off into a sea of deep organic droneswells, it’s like an orchestra tuning up while someone absent-mindedly pumps away on a harmonium. The longer this goes on the more spiritual and relaxing it becomes as you pick out tiny details playing around underneath. Its apparent stillness soon becomes absorbed by shimmering overtones in a kind of subconscious ray-of-sunlight crescendo.
This new Hellvete record is reminding Phil of Angus Maclise and me of the Rain Drinkers’ dronier moments. For the density and volume of the drones it’s quite a peaceful and unimposing proposition, as long as you don’t mind listening to the same note for 20 minutes, and there’s definite moments of payoff like the inclusion of a crackling guitar drone towards the end of the first side (I think this is actually a separate track but it’s the same note as the first) which lifts the quavering harmonium into the stratosphere.
The drone on the B side is a twangier and more Eastern-sounding one which spins lazily along in a much more relaxed way than the first side, but still the same basic formula of a persistent pedal chord and subtle accompanying details and textures is the order of the day. Really meditative, time-stopping and human-sounding drones full of mystical new age peace vibes; I’m in stoner heaven. We’ve got the limited coloured vinyl of this too, which will interest the limited coloured vinyl fans.
