8/10 Mike Staff review, 18 June 2013

This lavishly packaged CD comes with all manner of treats - in your numbered (of 200) envelope you will find a CD in a letterpressed card sleeve along with a hand-numbered thick card version of the front cover art, plus an envelope containing a 14 illustrations on individual sheets of paper, which serve both as a companion to the album and handy flashcards for teaching your young’un about different kinds of wildlife. Oh, and of course there’s the all-important leaf, can’t do one of these pastoral fancy packaging jobbies without the obligatory leaf.

The plastic disc which is getting this VIP treatment contains sounds created by Bluhm, a collaborative project between Tim Diagram of Maps & Diagrams/Atlantis notoriety and Macedonian warbler Genoveva, making beautiful whispery ambience that’s sent me all sleepy. There’s silken synth drones aplenty, rubbing against deep and distant rumbles, shimmering intangible melodies, occasional field recordings and plaintive twinkles, all topped off with Genoveva’s haunting, hushed vocals, often echoed and reverbed into the ether. It’s a relaxing but life-affirming sound, with the songs seeming to wash into one another in a way that makes it very hard to pick out highlights but very easy to like as an album. It’s been a bit of a stressful day but this is making everything better again.
