Sometimes we completely miss out on great records just because we are too busy, or too hot, or too stupid.  This record for example is one of those discs that we just know will appeal to a huge chunk of our customer base yet we had not even bothered even to play it. Ok, ok we admit it. We are not perfect. Sometimes we completely miss out on great records just because we are too busy, or too hot, or too stupid.  This record for example is one of those discs that we just know will appeal to a huge chunk of our customer base yet we had not even bothered even to play it. Speedy Ortiz is the band of a lady called Sadie Dupois who was a solo artist but who is now surrounded by a rather bracing band. It is in thrall to everything great and good about the flannel shirted ‘90s. As an overall sound bite I’d say it sounds like Sonic Youth playing ‘Wowee Zowee’ era Pavement with a Liz Phair type person on vocals. The songs are full of all kind of twists and turns, stops and starts guitars are played sideways - fuzzy and chunky the production (by the dude who did old timers Dinosaur Jr and Chelsea Light Moving’s recent records) is not unlike that on the stellar later Shudder To Think records, full of grungy vim and vigour although it could be the rising melodies, bursts into noisy chorus and wordy delivery that reminds me of that particular brilliant band.

Phil is saying Crowsdell which fills todays obscure reference quota. Also brought to mind are Archers of Loaf, Helium and all those types of groups. If that floats your boat then I severely urge you to give this a listen
