Canada’s best kept secret Braids release the follow up to their critically acclaimed debut ‘Native Speaker’, now signed to Full Time Hobby, ‘Flourish/Perish’ is the sound of a collective of musicians really doing what they love, experimenting with electronics and inventing new sounds, Braids make a lush combination of polished pop music with an experimental edge that I last heard done so well on Animal Collective’s ‘Merriweather Post Pavilion’.
With the beautiful voice of singer Standell-Preston over the band’s intricate jittering electronica sounds, alongside more live instrumentation like piano, guitar and drums, ‘Flourish/Perish’ has a Bjork-ish playfulness to it but with a much lighter sparkle and moments of Tortoise style post-rock with a soulful glitch like Bonobo or Telefon Tel Aviv. While Braid’s debut was recorded and written in a much more live setting, this marvellous double LP is rich and crisp in production, proving that this Montreal act have really honed their craft in the studio since those early days.
