8/10 Mike Staff review, 12 June 2013

On this 2CD set, music professor and Blue Man Group drummer Steve Wilkes collects a series of field recordings he has made over the past three years in Cape Cod as part of a fastidious aural history of the place. You hear splashing water, honking foghorns, clattering machinery, distant seabirds and brief snippets of speech on the fourth disc, with 39 tracks in four “acts” taking you on a very literal musical journey which I’m finding strangely soothing. In fact it’s making me quite sleepy.

Sleepier still, though, is the second disc, which sees Wilkes’s field recordings reinterpreted by a load of minimal ambient giants including Goldmund, Marcus Fischer, Loscil, Taylor Deupree and Simon Scott. As you would probably expect, the soothing field recordings are now joined by delicate tinkles and slow-flowing drones and glitches and grainy analogue hiss. I’m particularly enjoying Loscil’s dreamily mechanical interpretation with layers of gentle percussive loops and shimmering Philip Glass-esque melodies. Very pleasing. It’s very hard to review when you’re feeling this drowsy though...overall this is a beautifully put together and coherent concept piece with well captured field recordings and super-relaxo remixes, so if that’s your cup of tea then look no further!
