This is the second long player out on Market Square from Paul Messis, a garage punk aficionado from Sussex with a musical outlook straight outta the 1960s.
‘Case Closed’ is a rose tinted window into the past with a close eye on current trends. Opener ‘I Hate The World Around Me’ is an angst-ridden, teen-beat romp: loads of fuzz-drenched 12 string glory with a punk ethos that gives it a real edge. This is an album that is clearly influenced by the popular beat combos of the early 60s, with Byrdsian ballads like ‘Sad How A Love Fades Away’ (complete with Hammond organ solo). ‘Further From Yesterday’ has a little sociopolitical message with a story of disassociated youth and the punk idea of “nothing to do”.
With plenty of fuzz and jangle to keep the garage punk fans happy and an actual talent for good old traditional songwriting, ‘Case Closed’ is quite a fun little album full of nostalgia and with enough punk angst to annoy the parents, even though they remember this type of music the first time around!
