6/10 Ian Staff review, 27 June 2013

Former Hefner fellow Darren Hayman is back with an album of seventeenth century folk songs that follows on from his critically acclaimed album ‘The Violence’.

Available in a deluxe packaging featuring a lush booklet of Darren’s notes, lyrics, and images of the 13 songs by 13 artists, ‘Bugbears’ is a collection of lovingly crafted folk songs in a mostly band-orientated setting. Drums, acoustic and electric guitar/bass mix with more traditional folk instruments like ukulele, mandolin and accordion.

After dabbling in the English civil war on previous albums it seems Hayman has developed a penchant for this kind of thing, turning the kind of hay-nonnie-noh stuff that’s normally for the hardcore folkies into a pleasant set of songs with the added bonus of a history lesson in there too.

Available on heavyweight vinyl and comes with a download code for a digital version of the album.
