I like a bit of a DJ Sprinkles. Having discovered him via the magnificent reissue of the classic ‘Midtown 120’, it turns out that he makes a kind of airy, melodic house music invented seemingly just for me.
This is a 12” teaser for his upcoming, exciting looking compilation of remixes ‘Queerifications and Ruins’ which I will be taking home upon release. The first track here, originally by OK Yoko is a magnificent animal, full of pulsy synths, congas and chopped up vocal effects to create a warm, super tuneful, summery, blissed out music. Only half way through do some ‘proper’ beats come in, you barely missed them at all in the first half due to the lushness of the sound.
There is a very keen eye at work here, everything is beautifully in its place, but despite that it has a warm soulfulness that is rare within the field. On the flip we get an equally lush ambient excursion with soft pad keys, creating a mood of strange disquiet, a disembodied voice repeats through the mix creating perfectly the feeling of falling asleep on a summers afternoon and hearing voices suddenly appear through the open window. The track then goes into a spoken word mid-section, perfectly exemplifying some of the opposites and oddness Sprinkles puts into his work.
Always innovative, always full of ideas, this is a great taster for the album & sounds totally gorgeous with the grooves spread out on the vinyl. We also have the second part of this in stock, but sadly we have no time to do a listen and review. If its only half as good as this it will still be superb.
