6/10 Ian Staff review, 27 June 2013
Static Caravan release the debut EP from Birmingham based band Victories At Sea.
With just 4 tracks here this is a just a taste of what’s to come, but with both the NME and BBC6 Music championing this band from the start, and with so much 80s nostalgia around at the moment, it’s no wonder that Victories At Sea are getting their foot in the door. Their influences are clear as a bell from the beginning, taking ideas from the likes of New Order, OMD and more modern acts of the genre like Editors, Friendly Fires, etc.
The first two tracks, ‘Stay Positive’ and ‘Dive’, are full-on uptempo indie/dance anthems that will probably do them a lot of favours on the festival circuit this year, while ‘No Escape’ and ‘Low’ are the token ballads of the EP.
For a band just starting out this is quite a well produced and tidy little EP, pushing all the buttons with the indie darlings of the music press and getting the kids dancing in the NME tent at Glastonbury this year.
