This is the fifth album from those folktronica masters Tunng, ‘Turbines’ is the fruits of a heady 3 years work what with their last album being 2010’s ‘...And Then We Saw Land’, it’s certainly great to see them back doing what they do best. The cover features art from longtime friend and collaborator Vanessa da Silva, the music of course speaks for itself with opener ‘Once’ featuring a wonderful duel vocal and sweet piano refrain, ‘Trip Trap’ proves that aside from all the blips and squeaks and folk musings, Tunng really know how to pull out an instantly catchy pop tune.
Most songs here have the perfect matching of guitar and mellotron like on ‘The Village’ with the addition of a great 80’s synth sound, the vocal harmonies between Mike Lindsay and Becky Jacobs have all the echoes of folk duos from past and present like Richard and Linda Thompson or even The Mamas And The Papas but add to that the electronic noodling of modern day and you’ve got something pretty special. What makes Tunng stand out from the rest is that they sound very quintessentially English, which separates them from the Beach Boys obsessed Fleet Foxes at least but then I would hate to lump all of modern folk music together, ‘Turbines’ is another triumph from a band that are doing something very different with an otherwise tired genre.
