- Alone by The Sea by Chihei Hatakeyama
Japanese dreamster Chihei Hatakeyama has sent us a bunch of CDs on his new White Paddy Mountain label this week (as well as this there’s one by Shelling and a collaboration-laden one by Opitope), with four pieces on this CD titled ‘Alone by The Sea’ I-III and ‘In Dreams’.
As we’ve all come to expect from Hatakeyama, these are perfectly poised, slowly cycling passages of melodic drone-drift with indeterminable tones washing gently over you, calming your frayed nerves and slowing your heartbeat. This one seems to be expressing some kind of sense of longing which reminds me of the feels I get from William Basinski. Warm melodic drone goodness you’ll keep coming back to.

This album is a little different from Chihei's usual sounds and approaches to the ambient/drone genre because of the fact that he only used some old vinyl record he found at a bargain sale as the source material. For me this is my favorite thing he has done to date and consider it some of his best work too. The tracks are so beautiful, solemn, powerful, and devastatingly sad. A sense of emptiness and longing wash over you as the slow melodies seamlessly repeat with gentle minor changes.
Coupled with a warm late spring day with sapphire blue skies and big white puffy clouds it can be a real tear jerker.
If you're a fan of sad melodic ambient or drone this release is a must.
