- Ghost Colored Halo by Lovesliescrushing
I had no idea that lovesliescrushing had been going since the early 90's. Judging by the fact that all previous titles we've carried by them have all sold out I think it's safe to say there are a fair few fans / followers out there.
This is the tenth album from the duo of Scott Cortez and Melissa Arpin-Duimstra and it's a beauty. From opener 'Blemished Sunspot' it's clear we're in for a total bliss out with swirling textured drones in that place where ambient meets shoegaze. Melissa uses her voice sparsely, never taking over from the colourful loops and washed out guitar. She employs effects to the vocal fragments to really compliment and enhance the ethereal quality of the music. Although the elements are seemingly smudged together to create a fuzzy haze there's a really clarity to the sound, softened by tape hiss and reverb.
Things get somewhat darker at times as on 'Darklit And Crow' with it's gloomy bass and angelic vocals giving a real haunting, ghostly atmosphere. 'Ghost Coloured' is brimming with lush warm hissy ambience and spectral guitar. Closer 'Blacklight Thundering Halo' is an epic thirteen and a half minute ride traversing both dark and light. The pace of the album is really relaxed and just flows effortlessly.
Recommended for fans of Simon Scott, Seefeel My Bloody Valentine, William Basinski, Leyland Kirby, Tim Hecker etc. I’ve heard this four times in the last week and it still rewards. Excellent stuff as always from these guys.
