9/10 Penrith Steve 29th July 2015

Harmony laden and incredibly laid back, meticulous, measured, sweet and woozy. The good thing about “Hazel” by Young Hunting is that there’s not much else like this around at the moment, Young Hunting stand alone.

“Into Yr Mind” is beautifully executed, like all the songs on here, and is reminiscent of The Beach Boys “In Your Room” in sound but not melody. “Sweet Bird” is makes me think of Edwyn Collins, whilst this music is informed by certain other artists, it doesn’t steal. “Maze” should be called “Haze” as it’s a fabulous piece of laid back summery pop. “Baby’s First Steps” has almost Appalachian- style harmonies that float over an otherwise dark sounding song. The heartbreaking “Annabelle” serves as the album’s centerpiece, with its haunting refrain of “Annabelle, Annabelle, shouldn’t you be home by now?”

The closing track, “Ride On” is perhaps the best of the bunch and makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. It’s almost like a dark folk song with pristine guitars and sublime melody. What a way to end and album!
