- Hey Sailor Boy! by Cosines

Everyone is having a great time in the other room, congo-ing around the place to Melt Yourself Down. I’m stuck in the wendy house in the corner with the rest of the week’s releases. First up Cosines, from London, feature the lady part of Arthur and Martha who did a great little single a few years ago. A side ‘Hey Sailor Boy’ is winsome, faux-naive pop whose melody recalls almost exactly the Beach Boys’ ‘You’re So Good To Me’ with lots of nautical references - ‘sharks’, ‘pieces of eight’, ‘walking the plank’ - as if the lyricist got a balloon each time they came up with something ‘sea’ referencing. Then they rhyme ‘pilot’ with ‘like it’. It’s all tongue in cheek though I reckon.
The B side changes tack completely with a grungy piece of indie pop with male/female harmonies that work pretty well and a kind of Stereolab-as-played-by-a-school-band vibe which is pretty damn endearing. They mention Skunk Anansie before going off into a big wig out at the end. Everett True is a fan apparently, watch this space for a twee-pop world domination. In the meantime, there’s a 7” to be bought.
