Ty Segall / Chad and the Meatbodies LAMC No. 7
9/10 from Mike (Staff) on 04 June 2013
Ty Segall collectors will be happy to get their hands on this latest offering from the mercurial garage tyke - this time he’s sharing seven inches with Chad & The Meatbodies, and his offering is pretty different to his usual fare. His ‘Music For A Film 1’ is a hard grooving instrumental with lots of percussion and a gnarly fuzz guitar spluttering out stop-start garage funk snot. The debt to ‘60s surf/tropicalia/titty-shaker instrumentals is heavily apparent but as always Segall delivers it with such wild confidence that it’s totally convincing.
Over on the other side Chad & The Meatbodies have a hard-hitting garage punky number that sounds a lot like Thee Oh Sees, fast fuzzed guitar, psychedelic reverby vocal harmonies and falsetto oooh-oohs and a pounding, rumbling rhythm section add up to a souped up take on ‘60s garage that’s totally enjoyable and, as I mentioned before, sounds like Thee Oh Sees. At the end there’s some cheeseball Tight Phantomz-esque guitar fun too. Not exactly doing anything that hasn’t already been done a hundred times, but somehow squeezing everything you already love about garage rock into a glorious three-minute rush of unironic fun. Very curious to hear more from this lot. Great single!

We're not your normal record shop...
Please note that whilst we're always happy to see you, we are not a normal record shop where you can come and browse the stacks.
There are no stacks.
Nope, instead we are basically a kind of crap lo-fi Argos for vinyl records. So, instead of trudging all the way to sunny Holbeck in anticipation of being able to flick through shelf after shelf of releases, please place your orders online first and use our 'In-store collect' option in the checkout.
