Ralfe Band’s warm and evocative soundtrack to quirky Boosh-related surreal comedy ‘Bunny & The Bull’ was my introduction to the band and still gets pretty regular spins at my house, although I’m sorry to say I’ve never actually checked out any of their non-soundtrack material until now! Here’s their new one, ‘Son Be Wise’, which sees Oly Ralfe & co on similarly strong form with a collection of dusky piano-led shuffles with barely-there Low-esque drumming, spooky wibbly guitar, and Ralfe’s weary voice leading the way unobtrusively.

It’s thoroughly tasteful, very English, with touches of ‘60s pastoral psychedelia and cinematic but stripped back arrangements. I have to admit this type of singer-songwriter stuff doesn’t often do much for me but Ralfe Band have a beautifully measured approach which I find quite relatable and unshowy. Despite putting his own name to his band, Ralfe lets the songs do the talking and doesn’t try to make a spectacle of himself. It kind of reminds me of the restrained moments of ‘13’-era Blur when they were at their most dignified, but more piano-led. This is totally nice, well worth a listen.
