Jon Hopkins' breakthrough album 'Immunity' is a concept record which perfectly captures the events of a night out clubbing. The uncertainty, excitement, the night's climax, and the sweaty energetic dancing on packed dancefloors under blinding strobes is encapsulated in bursts of house, techno and IDM, rounded off with gorgeous ambient soundscapes. Ethereal, cerebral, uplifting and suspenseful; Jon Hopkins created an electronic classic here on this Mercury Prize nominated album.

Is this the first techno record to ever come out on Domino? Jon Hopkins aka Brian Eno’s drinking buddy has somewhat surprised me with this record. All the  lush ambient atmospherics he usually creates are still present to an extent but here the emphasis is more aimed at the dancefloor and so it’s beats galore. From slow slow stomping 4/4 to Burial style more 2-step influenced rhythms.

It’s all very slick, tasteful and well executed. ‘Collider’ is a real cerebral slow burning techno stomper tied down by functional 4/4 ethereal atmospherics its a real album highlight. There are also quieter introspective moments such as the gentle piano of ‘Abandon’ Window. It’s all very well done but possibly a bit too safe and sophisticated for my palate. Still it’s worth checking if you’re into the ‘Open Eye Signal’ taster white label 12”.

This record is the perfect example of an electronic music made with heart. The heart is the perfect controller of the machines, the machines execute the emotion, the emotion rules our world. Brilliant album, I was surprised how beautiful I found it to be, easily one of the top 2013 albums for me.

Forget the producing for and with coldplay/Brian Eno connection this guy needs to be pitched as a serious electronic musician. Insides LP was brilliant and one of my favourite albums of 2009, however the mercury nominated diamond mine didn't do it for me.

So where does he go next, well with Immunity, head on with Zombie, Helious,Ulrich Schnauss and everyones friend Burial. Great surprize and good progession in more up beat manor but does have touches of insides in places such as " breathe this air". Bold move that comes off well, Mr Hopkins.
