I thought nothing of Hooded Fang’s first record but I have kind of enjoyed this second one, they’ve developed their garage rock sound further on to the point that they no longer sound like The Strokes without the tunes. It’s a blitzkreig sound with churning guitars, strangely effected lead vocals. ‘Graves’ is somewhat like the Pixies playing Jesus and Mary Chain which of course has actually happened with ‘Head On’ but...better than that. It’s a great 100 mile an hour belter of a tune that sweeps you along as if you have got your cardigan ensnared on a runaway train.

‘Ode to Subterrania’ is a typical example of their newfound confidence in that it is led by strange chorused guitars (they would have never done that before) and pulsating bass, not over reliant on melody a track which which leads perfectly into ‘Bye Bye Land’ which is as tuneful as you can get with hints of Nirvana in the garagey sounds. It’s a whole heap of fuzzed guitar fun throughout, everything thrashes along at a breakneck paced and some tunes to match. It doesn’t reinvent the wheel but at least it doesn’t re-invent it in a rollickingly good manner.
