Diamond Terrifier aka Sam Hillmer here with his latest effort on Terrible Records. DJ, artist, curator, Sam it seems is a man of many talents and here we see him living in a world where the saxophone isn’t just an instrument but a completely new way of thinking and creating music that exists beyond the norm. TSBWAS is a half hour piece split into four parts, Hillmer’s sax seems to cascade into various tones and forms that skronk and gurgle through layers of electronic effects, mixtures of delay and feedback shriek into your ears with almost frightening emotion.
With a mostly ambient drone feel to the album interspersed with moments of industrial fear (‘Triple Gem’), minimal free form (‘Two Witnesses’) and laid back sax musings (‘TSBWAS’), this is impressive stuff, especially as I’m not a fan of the saxophone at all really. It’s engaging and not too overpowering as a lot of sax based music can be, this has the circular breathing styles of Colin Stetson but with the experimentation of John Zorn, an altogether interesting mix that might just change my sax hating ways.
