- The Raw and the Cooked by Chris Corsano & Bill Orcutt

Noise-skronk fans will be delighted (and ‘80s pop fans dismayed) to learn that this new LP from Corsano and Orcutt is in fact completely unrelated to the Fine Young Cannibals’ magnum opus, instead collecting a selection of wild and unhinged tracks from the pair’s collaborative tour of improv mayhem around the USA last year.
As you would expect, then, it’s crammed full of puttering, crumbling, scattershot drums and splay fingered, violent guitar improvisation delivered with a constant energy and enthusiasm as the two of them navigate their way around the rapidly shifting sonic terrain with a lively glee, throwing caution to the wind as they crunch and chunter their way through a succession of quickfire freeform gems which are actually much less heavy going than I feared. Sure, it’s uncompromising and chaotic, but there’s a strangely absorbing consistency of texture which keeps the listener anchored as their nimble fingers construct and destroy entire worlds around you.
