The ever-prolific Sic Alps are back once again this week, this time spreading three tracks over a 12” for Drag City. They’ve got Chris Woodhouse recording and mixing it and I have to say this is a much more accessible and less lo-fi record than we’ve really heard previously from this band, and with their ‘70s glam influence shining through more than ever. On the A side ‘She’s On Top’ is a yowling classic rock strutter complete with some great ‘70s r’n’b guitar licks, lovely overdriven tones and confident vocal harmonies. There’s a slight Rolling Stones vibe going on like People’s Temple but with more of a ‘60s garage tone palette. Absolutely superb pop single.
Flip it and there’s two more songs. ‘Carrie Jean’ is a sinister staccato chug which mixes Pink Floyd-ish psychedelia with visceral Oh Sees tones in a way that’ll make Tame Impala fans’ ears prick up, then closer ‘Biz Bag’ is a lively stomper which will please the Ty Segall-ites. I always expect quality from Sic Alps but this 12” seems to mark a new radio-friendly slickness to their sound which thankfully doesn’t sacrifice the raw energy of their earlier records. Highly recommended!
