7/10 Keith Tomlinson Customer review, 16th November 2014

Eldritch Dark is one of those time capsule albums – a near perfect facsimile of early 70s Magick infused rock like Black Sabbath, Jethro Tull, Uriah Heap or Black Widow.

So if you feel a bit depressed about the fact that the last 40 years have only been and bloody well gone, simply drop this beautifully bound, blood-red, coloured vinyl edition onto your turntable and viola! 1974 will instantly return, as though the intervening years have yet to happen.

With lyrics referencing ‘The Wicker Man’ and Aleister Crowley, it is all rather familiar occult territory, but there’s something very heart-warming about the way Blood Ceremony can reference clichéd subjects without a trace of irony or heavy-handedness.

Somehow they’ve got the rather delicate balance between homage and plagiarism just right. Perhaps it’s because they are Canadian. Possibly it is because they clearly adore the world in which their music will immerse you, making it churlish to resist.
