Here’s a little known private press gem from 1972 by Hoi’ Polloi, a collection performed and recorded by students at Richmond Indiana’s Earlham College. They weren’t a band so much as a loose collective of musicians working together on the record, recording live into a Revox tape machine and then playing along to those takes to create multi-layered and surprisingly sophisticated pop music with varied instrumentation, expressive individual performances and uplifting vocal harmonies. The record draws on everything from Wings to Motown to hippie folk to lounge jazz to Steely Dan-ish soft pop in a lovingly constructed spectacle which sounds surprisingly well-recorded considering the rudimentary techniques being used.
Not only that but this reissue comes with what I assume is a replica of the original liner notes, along with a whole new four page 12”x12” booklet with liner notes and an interview and some photos of the album being made. This is one for lovers of mysterious lost private press gems - very of-its-time but superbly executed under the circumstances and enjoyable throughout. It’s not hard to see why Family Vineyard considered this worthy of rediscovery.
