- Antarctica: Bliss Out v.2 by Windy & Carl
Michigan space-rock legends Windy & Carl’s 1997 album ‘Antarctica’ gets a second release on Darla Records, and with their names now cemented in experimental music history this is pretty amazing stuff. Carl Hultgren and Windy Weber create gorgeous waves of instrumental guitar bliss, three tracks over 40 minutes of flowing textures that have influenced the likes of Grouper and Tim Hecker but still remain the true originators of the genre.
Opening track ‘Antarctica’ has a hypnotic heartbeat of vinyl crackle carried along effortlessly by distant guitar echoes, ‘Traveling’ has a sparkling sound like the sun slowly creeping through the clouds on an icy tundra which makes for a perfect halfway point to the album, we finish with ‘Sunrise’ which is a hark back to early W&C and a much more tuneful piece with a shoegaze bassline and lashings of that trademark delayed guitar that fans have all come to know and love. Windy & Carl make music to drift along to and ‘Antarctica’ really does drift so gloriously like a biting antarctic wind, so cold and yet so magical!
