- Mayville Dream by Quicksails

I used to live on Mayville Terrace. Not the bleakest time in my life but certainly one of them. I wouldn’t describe my time there as a ‘dream’ exactly especially when I got burgled. Whether Chicago resident Ben Billington aka Quicksails had the outer recesses of Leeds 6 in his mind when writing this album is therefore a moot point. He comes up with a disjointed yet sparkly synth affair where the music continually seems to be in the process of falling down some stairs. Sound wise I’m reminded of Squarepusher but the structures are more free, there is nothing as conventional as a song amongst the first three pieces they are more concerned with syncopated percussion and discordant synth work. There is an ear cleanser of soft synths in the shape of ‘Only Escape’ with some eerie twinkles adding to the general sense of unease.
Side 2 opens with one of the more straightforward compositions, some really nice organ plays out a gorgeous two note refrain whilst all manner of chaos goes on in the background, its like Yo La Tengo collaborating with Sun Ra in the jungle. The machine gun fire weirdness of ‘Late Realization’ closes the record on a typically atonal and questioning manner.
