9/10 Mike Staff review, 03 May 2013

This hasn’t made it to the review pile but I feel compelled to say a few words about it because it’s a pretty momentous release. After years of their records going for ridiculous prices, Southern Records are reissuing Rudimentary Peni’s back catalogue, starting with ‘95’s ‘Pope Adrian 37th Psychristiatric’ which has astonishingly never been pressed on vinyl before!

For those who aren’t familiar with the seminal British noise punk band and their back catalogue, it’s a gut-punchingly psychedelic introduction. While their earlier releases had an endless stream of short, ranty noise-punk songs, ‘Pope Adrian 37th Psychristiatric’ was written while singer Nick Blinko was sectioned because of delusions that he was the aforementioned Pope Adrian, and this concept album of splintered guitars, sickeningly churning repetition and strangled screams is backed by an endlessly looped voice saying ‘Papas Adrianos’ over and over again for its entirety. It’s a darkly psychedelic experience you won’t forget in a hurry.

Even 18 years after its release it’s still a dizzyingly potent experience which will make you feel like you’re losing your mind. Gorgeous packaging, too, with a poster and a download and a full-size booklet of Blinko’s mind-scrambling drawings. Noise punk fans need this record, and the other five which are going to follow. It’s an iconic classic, records this good never go out of style.
