This isn’t technically an M83 record but in fact is the work of M83’s Anthony Gonzalez and soundtracker Joseph Trabanese (‘Tron’, ‘The Raid’), soundtracking recent John Cruise mega-spectacle ‘Oblivion’, with the vinyl out on Mondo, who I thought were more of a vintage horror specialist, but never mind. This is straight-up blockbuster fare, really epic-sounding with lots of booming brass swells, sweeping strings and more than a smattering of super-slick synth action.
It’s certainly more John Williams than John Carpenter with its booming Phil Collins-esque drums, bold melodic themes and dense orchestral tones - this is Epic with a capital E. It’s a little slick and expansive for my taste, clearly made for the cinemaplex, and fans of M83’s recent ‘80s pop stylings might be left a little cold by the insistent marching orchestral bombast (although the closing title track, billed as an M83 track, is closer to their classic sound), but fans of blockbuster soundtracks will feel ten feet tall when they stride around town listening to this on their headphones.
