- Kitchen by Kevin Drumm

We finally scored some copies of this clear vinyl plate from the excellent Bocian label. It follows Drumm’s ‘Crowded’ record for the imprint which was one of my personal highlights of 2012. ‘Kitchen’ begins with what is apparently violin and accordion loops although the natural sound of the instruments are rendered unrecognizable through the use of effects, smudging them together into unnerving black ambient tones. Gradually they mutate, seemingly becoming increasingly more cold and sinister.
On the flipside things are nowhere near as restrained yet maintain a steady, subtle pace with layers of buzzing and ruptured tones that sound like they’re really struggling, almost like they’re dying, wriggling for a final chance be heard amongst the others which are all battling it out. Not sure how exactly this was created but there’s a kit list on the back of the sleeve that gives half the game away. This didn’t blow me away like the ‘Crowded’ record did but still if you’re a Kevin Drumm follower I’m sure you’ll dig it.
