- Borrowed Time by Parquet Courts

Parquet Courts’ debut album ‘Light Up Gold’ is already one of my favourites of 2013, with our first shipment selling out pretty much instantaneously followed by an interminable wait for top-ups as the label struggled to meet the unexpected level of demand. Well, now they’re back with proper UK distribution (at the time of writing, the album is back on CD and the LP is due back next week) and Rough Trade’s For Us imprint have another special treat - this UK-only 7”, apparently limited to just 200 copies, which has ‘Borrowed Time’ from the album and two exclusive tracks.
The lead track is totally brilliant and one of the album’s highlights, a bouncy bit of indie pop with a Chris Leo-meets-Mark E Smith sprechgesang vocal line and aggressively jangling melodic guitar. Overleaf, the punky ‘Smart Aleck Kid’ is fast and loose and clean like something off the most recent Tyvek LP, and the even better ‘Free Ice’ is a noisy, catchy slacker gem like Pavement jamming with Urusei Yatsura. This band are great, I’d write more about that here but my time is nearly as limited as this record! Get this, and get the album too while you’re at it.
